Stressing the importance of more involvement from Democrats in future Broward County elections, Mitch Ceasar, chair of the Broward County Democratic Executive Committee, spoke to a room of supporters at a Dolphin Democrats meeting June 8 at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida.

Ceasar told the group that his committee was going to do all that it could to insure that the Democratic presence in Broward was as strong as ever, which he said began last November when seven offices were opened during the election, one of which was located in Wilton Manors.

Even with the defeat in November, Ceasar praised Democrats for their victories in various Broward County cities this past March. He specifically mentioned Weston where the difference between registered Democrats and Republicans is about 200 voters. In that election, Democrats won multiple seats while Republicans walked away empty handed.

He also mentioned the decision by Republican Rep. Katherine Harris, a Republican, to run for U.S. Senate against incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson. Harris is widely known for her role in the 2000 presidential election, which ultimately led to the election of George W. Bush.

Ceasar said her presence alone would be enough to draw lots of Democrats to the polls simply because of the party’s great disliking for her.

“Katherine Harris is the greatest unifier of the Democratic party,” said Ceasar. “She is the poster child for corruption and everything wrong with the Republican Party. We need to make an example of her.”

During his 15-minute speech, Ceasar also spoke about Florida’s upcoming governor race and the spot that is open on the Fort Lauderdale City Commission now that Dean Trantalis has announced he will not seek reelection. He stressed the importance of getting the best Democratic contenders in these races and that electing a Democratic governor would be the key to electing a Democratic president.

“If we have a Democratic governor, that one person could stop terrible legislation. If we have a Democratic governor, that will set a predicate for a Democratic president,” said Ceasar.

And like in past elections, Ceasar said Florida would once again be ground-zero for future elections given its status as a swing state. He also touched briefly on the recent uproar over comments by Democratic Chair Howard Dean in which he said the Republican Party “was pretty much a white, Christian party,” of which many had “never made an honest living.”

While Republicans and some Democrats were outraged by Dean’s comments, Ceasar called the comments meaningless and said they wouldn’t affect the Democratic Party.

But in all, Ceasar’s message was one of encouragement to fellow Democrats, urging them to work like never before.

“If you thought you did a lot before, you’re going to have to do a lot more this time,” he said.
