Million Fag March on Westboro Baptist Gets Phelps Attention
Silent Protest at Mayor's Prayer Breakfast
| | PRESS RELEASE March 10, 2008 | | For Immediate Release Contact: Scott Hall
Gay American Heroes Foundation 321-506-8738 | | | | Silent Protest at Mayor's Prayer Breakfast | | "All people who live honestly about their sexual orientation or gender identity are heroic, as it takes great strength and courage to face the daily struggles for personal freedom in the face of enormous opposition; to utimately give their life for said freedom makes them...HEROES. " | The Gay American Heroes Foundation and Fight OUT Loud are organizing a silent protest at the Fort Lauderdale Mayor's Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, March13. Mayor Naugle has invited to be key-note speaker Jim Daly, President of Focus on the Family, a right-wing religious group who has a history of attacking the LGBT community. It seems the Mayor is again looking to incite an atmosphere of hate and violence in Fort Lauderdale. We are asking for other organizations and residents to come to the Broward County Convention Center (1950 Eisenhower Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL) at 6:30am to stand in solidarity against the hate speech being spewed by Naugle and his supporters. We realize this is short notice, but are hoping for a strong, small contingent of LGBT people and allies to show up and picket. We will have pictures of Simmie Williams and other hate crimes victims to hold, as well as signs with family oriented messages, like "Stop murdering our families", "Hate Speech = Violence", "Protect ALL Children", "Stop the Hate", "Naugle's Words Incite Violence" etc... Feel free to make and bring your own signs with these types of messages on them. Please no profanity. We also ask that the protest stay EXTREMELY non-confrontational with the attendees. We have to come out taking the high road, much like the rally this summer. That is why it will be a silent protest, just a presence to let our view be known and not stoop to Naugle's tactics. We can no longer afford to be silent. | | |

McCain Creates a Storm for Charlie Crist
For Immediate Release: March 5, 2008 Contact: Mark Bubriski or Alejandro Miyar 850.222.3411 Crist's Silence is Deafening - McCain Backer Hates Catholics, Claims Hurricanes are 'Judgment of God' TALLAHASSEE - In another example of his lack of concern for the people of Florida, part-time Governor Charlie Crist wants to be John McCain's running mate so badly that he is ignoring the Republican nominee's refusal to denounce comments a controversial Texas televangelist made about Catholics and about hurricane victims.
John McCain has accepted the endorsement of Rev. John Hagee, who has offered some of the most shameful and divisive religion-based rhetoric in recent times. The conservative Catholic League criticized McCain for not rebuking Hagee who has made a career out of calling Catholicism a "cult." Hagee has also said that Hurricane Katrina was "the judgment of God" on Gulf Coast sinners.
"Will Charlie Crist stand up for the good people of Florida who have been hit hard by hurricanes? And will he stand up for Florida Catholics? Or will he sink as low as John McCain in pandering to the extreme right-wing of the Republican Party?" Florida Democratic Party spokesman Mark Bubriski asked. "If Empty Chair Charlie Crist is going to hitch his wagon to bigoted people like Hagee, maybe he should extend his next vacation permanently. Otherwise, he ought to ask McCain to denounce these hateful attacks and then get back to work on Florida's economic problems."

Hagee Calls Catholic Church 'The Great Whore', 'False Cult System'; Links Hitler to Catholics "The televangelist, San Antonio megachurch leader John Hagee, has referred to the Roman Catholic Church as 'the great whore' and called it a 'false cult system' and 'the apostate church'; the word 'apostate' means someone who has forsaken his religion. He also has linked Adolf Hitler to the Catholic church, suggesting it helped shape his anti-Semitism. Catholic groups are pressuring McCain to go further and reject the endorsement, which he announced at a news conference with Hagee last week. The Democratic National Committee also is publicizing Hagee's views. 'Indeed, for the past few decades, he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church," said Catholic League President Bill Donohue. 'Senator Obama has repudiated the endorsement of Louis Farrakhan, another bigot,' Donohue said. 'McCain should follow suit and retract his embrace of Hagee.'" [Associated Press, 3/3/08]
McCain Voted Against Appropriating $109 Billion, Including $74 Billion for Iraq, $28 Billion for Hurricane Relief. In 2006, McCain voted against appropriating roughly $109 billion in emergency supplemental funding for fiscal 2006. It would provide $72.4 billion in fiscal 2006 funds for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and foreign aid, not counting an almost 3 percent across-the-board cut to defense funds in the bill. It would provide more than $28 billion for hurricane relief, approximately $2.3 billion for pandemic flu preparations and $1.9 billion for border security efforts. President Bush has threatened to veto any spending bill that exceeded $95 billion, which the Senate bill does by $14 billion. 35 senators signed a letter promising to sustain that veto. [HR 4939, Vote 112, 5/4/06, Passed 78-20, D 43-0; R 34-20; I 1-0] McCain Voted Against Granting Access To Medicaid For Hurricane Katrina Victims For Up To Five Months. In 2005, McCain voted against an amendment that would grant access to Medicaid to Hurricane Katrina victims for up to five months; it also provided full federal funding for Medicaid in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama for up to one year; provided $800 million to compensate providers caring for Katrina evacuees; it temporarily suspended the Medicare Part B late enrollment penalty; and permitted states hit by or serving evacuees to access the TANF Contingency Fund. It would be offset with funds unspent by the FEMA. In 2005, McCain voted against an amendment to establish a congressional commission to examine the Federal, State, and local response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Region of the United States especially in the States of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and other areas impacted in the aftermath and make immediate corrective measures to improve such responses in the future. At Right-Wing Conference, McCain Bragged About His Opposition To A National Catastrophic Insurance Fund. In his speech to CPAC, McCain highlighted his opposition to the national insurance fund, bragging, "I campaigned in Florida against the national catastrophic insurance fund bill that passed the House of Representatives..." [John McCain CPAC Remarks As Prepared For Delivery, 2/7/08] McCain Uncommitted to Insurance Fund. In a campaign event in Florida, McCain said, "If people are going to build homes where hurricanes hit, they have to assume a great part of that liability. We don't have that many hurricanes that hit Arizona, as you know. We need to all work together and see if the present unacceptable situation can be remedied, and if that requires some federal action, I'm for it - but not just insuring anybody for any circumstance. I'm not going to do that. I would not support such a thing." [St. Petersburg Times, 9/2/07]

Jim Naugle Uses Tax Dollars to Incite Violence in South Florida
ACTION ALERT! Please Read and Act! Forward to as many as possible! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 3, 2008 Jim Naugle Uses Tax Dollars to Incite Violence in South Florida Mayor Naugle issues hate filled statement in city news letter just days before hate crime attacks Message from Fight OUT Loud: Mayor Jim Naugle of Fort Lauderdale has once again used his office to spread fear and hate about the gay community. In the latest city newsletter, paid for by the city and available on the city's website, Naugle again used misinformation and bigotry to paint the LGBT community as predators and a danger. In the official Mayor's message, on the very first page of the newsletter, Naugle again makes the claim that gay men are making our parks and public places unsafe for children and that we need to be "curtailing these illegal activities in the future." This echoes his continued attacks and claims that he wants to "stop an attempt by gays to take over Fort Lauderdale." This newsletter, mailed to businesses and homes across the city, was sent out on February 16, 2008, only days before both the tragic shooting of Simmie Williams Jr and the savage gay-bashing on Las Olas Blvd. We cannot deny the dangerous effects of Mayor Naugle's words any longer. How much longer will our city allow Naugle to incite hate and violence towards the LGBT community? Have we so soon forgotten when Naugle held a press conference in City Hall this summer with so-called "religious" leaders (including the paramilitary-clad director of the men's ministry at Koinonia Worship Center, Mathes Guice, who's myspace page features the sounds of gunfire and battle) and made the call to "take back the streets of Fort Lauderdale from the homosexual community" and "transform Fort Lauderdale and Broward County into the Bible Belt of South Florida" because the LGBT community has "led the spiritual community on a collision course with Satan" (Sun-Sentinel, Sept 4, 2007). The Rev. Aaron Wiggins of Pompano also said, "This will not stand and we will stop it by any means necessary." Both men vowed to do whatever it takes to fend off the campaign waged by "gay activists" against Naugle (Broward Times, Sept 7 2007). This is an unmistakable call to violence. Unfortunately, that call has been answered. This type of dangerous rhetoric directly leads to an atmosphere of hate and violence. We have seen the effects of this atmosphere in the murder of Simmie Williams and the beating of Melbourne Brunner. For leaders like Naugle to use their office to attack an entire community is unacceptable. For the City of Fort Lauderdale to use tax dollars to print and send this message out into the community is outrageous. We demand that the city IMMEDIATELY remove this inflammatory language from its site and never again use our tax dollars to attack residents and further create an dangerous environment of violence and hate. We also demand that leaders on all levels speak out against hatred and bigotry and the violence it has created in our community. Please contact the Fort Lauderdale City Commission and demand they act! Commissioner Christine Teel: CTeel@fortlauderdale.gov Commissioner Charlotte E. Time to Stop Hatred
We can be horrified, but we cannot be surprised.
Witness the death of yet another child who said he was gay the murder of another teenager who defied gender stereotypes.
On Friday, Feb. 22, 17-year-old Simmie Williams Jr. was gunned down on a street corner in Broward County. Just 10 days earlier, Lawrence King, a 15-year-old Oxnard, Calif., junior high student, was shot to death in his own classroom because he wore makeup because he was different. And less than one year ago, Ryan Keith Skipper, 24, was stabbed to death in Polk County.
In Broward, police are investigating Simmie Williams' murder as a possible hate crime based on the words they say were exchanged before the shooting. In California, Lawrence King, a constant target of harassment and ridicule, was shot in the back and in the head by a 14-year-old who told friends in advance that Lawrence was "having his last day." Ryan's teenaged killers drove around town in his stolen, blood-soaked car bragging that they had "killed a fag."
Now comes word that a noose has been left in a Pembroke Pines cafeteria in an apparent act of racial intimidation. We must condemn that act as well. We must stand up to hate no matter what form it takes and demand that others stand with the LGBT community just as visibly.
We can be overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness in the face of such horrifying tragedy. But we can no longer indulge in the fantasy that there is nothing we could have done to stop it.
There is a clear path to reducing the harassment and murder of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Across the country, study after study has shown that hate violence starts with bullying in schools. We know the perpetrators are overwhelmingly teenagers and young adults.
And yet for seven years, the Florida Legislature has failed to pass a ban on school bullying for one shameful reason lawmakers have not wanted to include protections for lesbian, gay and transgender students. They have chosen to sacrifice the safety of students to avoid acknowledging that some of our most vulnerable young people are gay and transgender.
Instead, they have proposed a ban that leaves out the types of bullying that account for the highest incidences and the most violence: bullying based on appearance, sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. Racist, sexist and religious-based bullying are referenced, and rightly so, but this weak measure is written to fail kids who are in urgent need of the law's protection, kids like Simmie and Lawrence.
Specificity in this kind of law is essential to enforcement. A vague anti-bullying law is like having signs that say "Don't Speed" instead of signs that say "55 mph." Too many good teachers and administrators have either not been trained to intervene effectively when bullying occurs, or they hesitate because they fear they will not receive the support of school administrations.
Research shows that anti-gay attacks are socially acceptable and rampant in schools today ignored or even encouraged by teachers and administrators working without guidelines or training. We have let harassment, physical abuse and psychological violence against transgender, gay, lesbian and bisexual students become commonplace, even as we shake our heads over the latest deaths.
Lawrence's, Ryan's and Simmie's deaths are not aberrations, and it is disingenuous for us to act surprised. They are brutally predictable in a culture that teaches children that it's OK to insult, harass, beat up and dehumanize a person who is gay or transgender. The murderers in these crimes are often children themselves.
As the Florida Legislature begins session and moves toward the expected passage of a safe schools bill, they owe it to the families of Simmie Williams Jr., Ryan Skipper and Lawrence King to make sure that sexual orientation and gender identity and expression are included alongside race, sex and religion. We cannot have integrity in grieving with these families when our remedy pointedly leaves them out, glosses over their deaths, or lets the law generalize to the point of uselessness.
Our horror, our outrage, our prayers are empty until we take action to protect the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and families from this epidemic of violence. When we let anti-gay hatred and violence flourish, we share responsibility for the blood that eventually spills. We can be horrified, but we cannot be surprised.

Fort Lauderdale gays slammed for "Christian bashing"
The Rev. Gary Cass, a conservative Christian activist, is criticizing a representative of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force for remarks at a Fort Lauderdale gathering called to mark the murder of a gay teen and bashing of a gay adult. Referring to Matt Foreman as a "radical homosexual activist" Cass said he slandered the reputations of Christian ministers in Broward County. "Foreman is guilty of gross Christian bashing, the very kind of bashing he says he opposes against homosexuals," Cass said. Cass is head of the Fort Lauderdale based Christian Anti-Defamation Commission. He is best known as former executive director of the Center for Reclaiming America, the now-closed organization that was affiliated with the late Rev. D. James Kennedy's Coral Ridge Ministries. Right-wing watch, operated by the People for the American Way, has its own take on Cass' organization here. In a statement he released this afternoon, Cass commented on a video report (at left) on the Thursday evening event that's on the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Web site. Cass' take is that Foreman is declaring that the pulpits of Broward County are teaching hatred of homosexuals, inferring that Christian ministers are in some way responsible for the murder of Simmie Williams Jr., who was found dead in Broward County on a sidewalk dressed as a woman. "Radical homosexuals like Foreman are quick to exploit this tragic situation for their own political purposes and in order to bash Christians," Cass said in his press release. "Matt Foreman owes the ministers of Broward County an apology. "Faithful Christian churches must oppose homosexual behavior, just as they must oppose other behavior they consider to be sinful, but where is the proof that any minister has ever suggested or condoned violence?" asked Cass. "The fact is, no one knows who killed Simmie Williams Jr. or why. It is pretty safe to assume that the murderer was not a church member acting on advice from his pastor."
