CS/HB 583, regarding single sex Public Facilities, has as list of co-sponsors including George Moraitis. It was originally filed by Miami-Dade FL Rep.Artiles, to counter Miami-Dade County’s recent passage of a transgender rights bill. The original proposed language restricted access to single-sex bathroom facilities to those persons whose gender as listed on their birth certificates corresponded to the bathroom in question. The latest version of the proposed law now defines male and female as whatever gender is listed on the driver’s license or passport. Opponents of HB 583 say that even in its latest from, it would still require users of public restrooms to carry papers to prove they can use restrooms, and the latest definition of the bill still puts at risk those TG persons that may have not fully transitioned or have not been able to secure final documentation of the gender they identify with.
The Human Rights Campaign, Equality Florida, and other organizations state that this legislation serves to solve an imagined problem. One Republican in the FL House changed his mind and voted against the bill in Committee today, he expressed concerns that it will foster lawsuits. Regardless, the proposal still was approved by a seven to four vote in Committee today.
